Setting Boundaries as a Tutor

How to set healthy boundaries with students and parents: contact hours, scope, cancellations, and saying no without losing clients.

In short

Healthy tutor boundaries mean clear contact hours, a written cancellation policy, scope limited to what you agreed to teach, and the ability to say no to unreasonable requests — all stated upfront so relationships stay professional.

Define contact hours

Tell parents when you respond (e.g. weekdays 9–6). Messages outside that wait — this prevents burnout.

Scope is not unlimited

You teach the agreed subject and level. Extra subjects, unlimited marking, or 24/7 chat are scope creep — price or decline them.

Cancellation policy protects both sides

Written notice rules are a boundary, not rudeness. They protect your income and teach respect for your time.

Saying no professionally

"I do not have capacity" or "that is outside what we agreed" preserves the relationship better than slow resentment.

Common questions

Will boundaries lose me students?
Clear boundaries attract serious families and filter out draining clients. Most respect professionalism.
How to handle parents who message at midnight?
State contact hours in your welcome email and stick to them. Reply next working window.
