Our Mid-August Signup Spike Came From ChatGPT — Not Google

GA4 for Aug 8–20 2026: ChatGPT drove 27 newUsers and most tracked signups, while GSC had ~9 clicks. How we plan to recreate the spike without paid ads.

September 6, 2026·5 min read

In short: Between 14–17 August 2026, OBRI saw a real signup spike. GA4 attributes the quality side to ChatGPT (chatgpt.com / AI Assistant: 27 new users, 7 of 12 tracked signup_completed). Search Console had only ~9 clicks in the same Aug 8–20 window. To recreate it, we double down on citability of / and /en — not on another thin SEO package.

I build OBRI, a CRM for independent tutors. After the mid-August jump in profiles, we pulled GA4 + GSC for 8–20 August 2026 instead of guessing.

What the spike looked like

Date GA4 new users Note
Aug 8–12 ~0–1/day Quiet baseline
Aug 14 10 ChatGPT + organic appear
Aug 15 11 Direct jumps (often stripped referrers)
Aug 16 16 ChatGPT peak day (~8 new from AI)
Aug 17 19 Absolute peak
Aug 18 1 Dip
Aug 19–20 9 / 13 Partial rebound

Window totals (GA4): 84 new users, 177 sessions, 59 signup_started, 12 signup_completed. Supabase weekly profile counts for weeks of Aug 10 / Aug 17 (19 / 17) line up with that mid-month burst — GA4 undercounted OAuth completions until an Aug 18 tracking fix.

Channel ranking (evidence, not vibes)

Source / medium New users Tracked signup_completed users
(direct) / (none) 44 2
chatgpt.com / ai-assistant 27 7
google / organic 13 2
saashub.com / referral 0 0

Direct is the largest volume bucket. ChatGPT is the best conversion evidence. In practice those often overlap: in-app browsers and copy-paste links strip the referrer.

SaaSHub was live around Aug 19 in our directory runbook — after the peak. Its GA4 sessions looked like crawler noise (/dashboard, ~0 new users).

GSC for the same window: roughly 9 clicks / ~104 impressions. Organic helped a little. It did not create thirty-plus weekly profiles.

Where ChatGPT landed people

  1. / — homepage
  2. /en — English product page
  3. A long tail of templates / alternatives / auth

So the play is not “rank 400 blog posts.” It is: make the product pages quoteable, then keep publishing measurement notes models can cite.

Repeat playbook (what we are doing next)

  1. Homepage citability — keep a visible “In short” / FAQ on / and /en (what OBRI is, free plan, not a marketplace).
  2. Founder measurement posts — real windows, real channel tables (this article is one).
  3. llms.txt freshness — map this post and the product URLs.
  4. Third-party corroboration — Reddit / niche groups / filled directory profiles so models see the brand off-site.
  5. Self-reported “how did you hear?” on signup — so ChatGPT and dark social stop disappearing into Direct.
  6. Do not wait on GSC for this motion — AI discovery showed up before Google clicks did.

What I am not claiming

  • Nineteen new users in a day is not product-market fit.
  • Direct is not “all ChatGPT.”
  • Directories are useless forever — they were just not this spike.
  • We should abandon Google SEO. Equity after the obricrm.com migration is still settling.

I am claiming this: for a niche tutor CRM in 2026, one week of ChatGPT citations to clear product pages beat a month of thin Search Console activity. That is where we reinvest.

Frequently asked questions

What caused OBRI's mid-August 2026 signup spike?+

ChatGPT referral traffic. In GA4 for Aug 8–20 2026, chatgpt.com / ai-assistant brought 37 sessions and 27 new users, and accounted for 7 of 12 tracked signup_completed users. Google Search Console recorded only about 9 clicks in the same window — classic SEO did not create the spike.

Which pages did ChatGPT send people to?+

Mostly the product landings: homepage (/) and English product page (/en). Deep blog URLs were secondary. Models cite short product definitions more than long posts.

Did SaaSHub or directories cause the signup spike?+

No. SaaSHub showed sessions but ~0 new users in that window — crawler-style traffic to /dashboard, not human signups. Directories help brand corroboration later; they were not the Aug 14–17 driver.

How can a small SaaS recreate a ChatGPT signup spike?+

Keep / and /en extractable (In short + FAQ), publish founder measurement posts with real numbers, refresh llms.txt, and earn third-party mentions (Reddit, directories) so models can corroborate the brand. Do not wait for GSC clicks alone.
